Bernat Pipsqueak yarn is a super soft, bulky weight (size 5) yarn, that comes in several fun colors. I love how soft it is and use it for several of my newborn outfits. I have had a lot of people ask me how hard Bernat Pipsqueak yarn is to work with and I honestly don’t have a great answer for that. It really varies from person to person, but there is the benefit of the fuzz hiding mistakes. 🙂 The problem with this fuzzy yarn is that you really can’t see the stitches, so you have to go more off of how it feels and almost just know where the next stitch goes. However, once you get the hang of it, it works up quickly for some fun baby items. I highly recommend counting your stitches each row! It definitely gets easier the more you work with it though, which brought about this free pattern. This way you can give the yarn a try, while making an adorable bear hat. Then, if you want to try another, you can head over to my ‘patterns for sale’ section and I just published another free pattern in pipsqueak yarn!
There are several colors that you can choose to use for your bear, I decided to go with blue this time. Here are my favorite options: chocolate, baby blue, and tickle me pink.

Materials Needed:
Bulky Weight Yarn Size #5- I used Bernat Pipsqueak in baby blue.
Worsted Weight Yarn #4 – Yarn pictured is Caron Simply Soft in off-white.
Size H/5.0mm Crochet Hook (Or hook size needed to achieve correct gauge)
Tapestry Needle
Scissors
Gauge: Bulky Weight Yarn, Size 5: With “H” hook, about 3 rows of dc and 6 dc stitches across is 2” by 2”
Abbreviations:
Ch: chain
St(s): stitch(es)
sl st: slip stich
sc: single crochet
dc: double crochet
Size: Hat will come out a little smaller, since it will stretch when worn.
Size | Hat Circumference | Hat Length |
Newborn | 13-14” | 5.5” |
Notes for Hat:
- Ch 2 at beginning of rounds does not count as a dc. When joining at end of rounds, join to first dc with a slip stitch.
- This hat is worked in the round, there is no turning.
- The ( ) at the end of the round/row is the total stitches in that round/row.
Hat Instructions:
With bulky baby blue yarn and “H” hook, or hook used to get correct gauge.
Round 1: Create magic ring, Ch 2, 9 dc in ring, join with sl st to first dc. (9)
Round 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in each st around, join with sl st to first dc. (18)
Round 3: Ch 2, 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next st, repeat from * to * around, join with a sl st to first dc. (27)
Round 4: Ch 2, 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next 2 sts, repeat from * to * around, join with a sl st to first dc. (36)
Round 5-9: Ch 2, 1 dc in each st around, join with a sl st to first dc. (36) (5 Rows) Fasten off and weave in ends.
Bear Ears:
Inner Ear:
Using worsted weight yarn and “H” hook (or hook used to achieve gauge), start by making the inner part of the ear. I used Caron Simply Soft in off-white.
Row 1: Magic ring, Ch 1, 6 sc into the ring, join with a sl st to first sc. (6)
Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc into each st around, join with a sl st to first sc. (12)
Row 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next st, repeat from * to * around, join with a sl st to first sc. (18) Fasten off.
Repeat for your second inner ear, weave in ends, then set aside.
Outer Ear:
Using same bulky baby blue yarn that you used for the hat and “H” hook. Pattern is the same as the inner ear, except for how to finish. This will give you a slightly larger outer ear, compared to the inner.
Row 1: Magic ring, Ch 1, 6 sc into the circle, join with a sl st to first sc. (6)
Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc into each st around, join with a sl st to first sc. (12)
Row 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next st, repeat from * to * around, join with a sl st to first sc. (18)
Place the inner ear on top of the outer ear, Ch 1, 1 sc in each st around, through both layers. (18). Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing, to the hat. Repeat for second ear.
Using a tapestry needle, sew the ears to the hat from the top of round 2 to the bottom of round 3, of the hat. Weave in all ends.
I hope you like my little bear pattern! I will be publishing another free bear hat, made out of worsted weight yarn, just need to decide on the color combination. 🙂 I would love to hear what color(s) you choose!

Hello Helene,
I have not created this pattern in larger sizes, so I only have the newborn size to share.
Sorry about that!
