Free Crochet Newborn Angel Wings and Halo Pattern

I was thinking about a Valentine’s day outfit that was simple and sweet, which led to the creating of newborn angel wings and halo. Although, I feel as though an angel outfit could be used year round for a newborn, but I love the idea of it for Valentine’s day. Also, it’s great for those parents that don’t know the gender or want more gender neutral outfits.

Materials Needed:

Bulky Weight Yarn #5 – I used Bernat Pipsqueak in Whitey White (approx 60 yards) for the wings and Premier Lash Lux in Angora (approx 5 yards) for the halo. Any bulky weight yarn will work though.

Size H/5.0mm Crochet Hook

Optional: Pipe Cleaners – 2 in white (standard size is great – about 12″ long)

Gauge: Please check your gauge, to ensure correct sizing. Although sizing does not need to be exact for this pattern.

With ‘H’ hook and bulky weight yarn: 3 Rows of DC and 5 DC stitches across is 2” by 2”

Abbreviations: US/American Terminology

Ch: chain

St(s): stitch(es)

sl st: slip stitch

sc: single crochet

dc: double crochet

dc2tog: double crochet two together

Wings: With ‘H’ hook or hook used to achieve gauge and bulky weight white yarn. Ch 2 doesn’t count as a stitch.

Row 1: Ch 8, dc in the third chain from the hook and in the remaining 5 chains. (6)

Row 2: Ch 2, turn, 2 dc in the first st, 1 dc in the next 4 sts, 2 dc in the last st. (8)

Row 3: Ch 2, turn, 2 dc in the first st, 1 dc in the next 6 sts, 2 dc in the last st. (10)

Row 4: Ch 2, turn, 2 dc in the first st, 1 dc in the next 8 sts, 2 dc in the last st. (12)

Row 5: Ch 2, turn, 2 dc in the first st, 1 dc in the next 10 sts, 2 dc in the last st. (14)

Row 6: Ch 2, turn, 1 dc in each st across. (14)

Row 7: Ch 2, turn, dc2tog, 1 dc in the next 10 sts, dc2tog. (12)

Row 8: Ch 2, turn, 1 dc in each st across. (12)

Row 9: Ch 2, turn, dc2tog, 1 dc in the next 8 sts, dc2tog. (10)

Row 10: Ch 2, turn, 1 dc in each st across. (10)

Row 11: Ch 2, turn, dc2tog, 1 dc in the next 6 sts, dc2tog. (8)

Row 12: Ch 2, turn, 1 dc in each st across. (8)

Row 13: Ch 2, turn, dc2tog, 1 dc in the next 4 sts, dc2tog. (6)

Row 14: Ch 2, turn, dc2tog, 1 dc in the next 2 sts, dc2tog. (4)

Row 15: Ch 2, turn, dc2tog, dc2tog. (2)

Row 16: Ch 2, turn, dc2tog. (1) Ch 1, turn, sc around the entire wing – I recommend doing 2 sc for the end of each dc row, not doing any extra at the corners, so that it is more rounded, 1 sc in each st across the top/starting chain, for a total of 70 sc sts. Either fasten off or you can now add the pipe cleaner. Repeat for your second wing.

Adding the Pipe Cleaner: The pipe cleaner is completely optional. It really just depends if you want the wings to lay across the baby or if you would like to be able to shape and move the wing.

First wing – continuing from where you stopped above, ch 1, line the pipe cleaner up next to the side of the wing and do 1 sc over the pipe cleaner, along the outer edge of the wing.

Second wing – With the pipsqueak yarn you can’t really tell which way is the front/back of the wing, so this is optional. If you use another yarn, where you can see the front/back of the wing then you will need to finish off your yarn and join with a sl st at the top corner of the wing. That way you are looking at the right side of your work, which can be seen by looking at the sc you did around the wing. Then, you can ch 1, and sc over the pipe cleaner.

Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Sewing Wings Together:

Laying the wings down next to each other (with the pipe cleaner side on the outside), use a tapestry needle to sew about 3″ together, at your desired position. I started sewing mine together about 3″ down.

Halo:

With ‘H’ hook or hook used to achieve gauge and bulky weight white yarn

Round 1: Ch 44, join with a sl st to the first chain, to create a circle/ring. (44)

Round 2: Sl st in each chain around. Fasten off and weave in ends. (44)

This will give you a halo that is for a newborn – 13″ to 14″ head circumference. Depending on the baby and their head size, you might need to add or take away chains. Also, you can choose to make it a little smaller, so that it just sits on top of the baby’s head, instead of fitting like a headband.

*****You are responsible for your finished items. Due to small parts and sharp ends on pipe cleaners, the angel outfit can be a hazard for children under 3 years old. Please monitor all children. *****
